Schleier Wasserfall 2011

Schleier waterfall

The Schleier waterfall, cascading between Going and St. Johann in Tirol, is an attraction for extreme climbers.

Underneath the Maukspitze mountain in the Kaiser mountain chain, a waterfall cascades from a 60 m high rock spur, which is the Schleier waterfall. This natural phenomenon can be found in the holiday area of Kitzbühel and surroundings, that is to say between St. Johann in Tirol and Going, at 1,120 m asl. Actually there are two waterfalls, cascading into the depth, but this sight is nevertheless known as the “Schleier waterfall”.

In the later 80s, the sports climber Alexander Huber opened several routes in the X and XI level of difficulty, making this spot a meeting point for extreme climbers and free climbers from all over. In the course of time about 150 routes in the level of difficulty X have been opened up, making this area one of the leading ones on a worldwide scale. Alexander Huber, considered “the best rock climber” not only by Reinhold Messner, was the right person for creating new routes. All the year round in this area you can, however, watch the rock acrobats, surrounded by a fabulous natural scenery.

The Schleier waterfall can be reached via Going and St. Johann in Tirol: from Going you can best reach it on the trail via the Graspoint Niederalm pasture, starting at the parking space Sinnersbach. This walk takes you about 45 minutes. In St. Johann in Tirol, branch off at the famous Stanglwirt and follow the signpost “Badesee” (bathing lake), afterwards follow the Aschauer trail until you reach a parking space in the forest (barrier). From here you proceed on foot. By the way: if you would like to make a tour that starts at the Schleier waterfall, you can walk to the Ackerlhütte mountain hut. It is located at 1,455 m asl and provides a breathtaking view on the Kitzbühel Alps and the Hohe Tauern mountain chain.
