Pitzenklamm 2011

Pitzenklamm gorge

The Luis Trenker trail and an educational trail stretch across the impressive Pitzenklamm gorge in the Pitztal valley.

In the Pitztal valley, strictly speaking from Arzl to the Inntal gorge, the Luis Trenker trail stretches its way across the wild romantic Pitzenklamm gorge. The 1.5 km long trail was dedicated to Luis Trenker, as his father came from Arzl and because the South Tyrolean alpinist Luis Trenker often used to visit the Pitztal valley. The round trail starts at Arzl at the road bridge over the Pitze river, where also the huge Luis Trenker monument is located.

Along the Luis Trenker trail, an interesting tree educational trail has been established by the Kaunergrat Nature Park, including several information panels. Particularly popular are guided walks, as the local guides know much about the peculiarities and the varied flora and fauna of the natural forest reserve “Arzler Pitzeklamm”. Down into the deep gorge, the wild water of the Pitze river breaks its way through the rocks, fed by the surrounding glaciers. Many resting places and possibilities to play make the gorge also interesting for kids. The trail takes continuously towards the locality of Wald. Across the Benni Raich bridge you reach your starting point Arzl. Schedule about 2.5 hours for this round trail.

The above mentioned Benni Raich bridge connects the villages of Arzl and Wald and spans the Pitzenklamm gorge. When it was constructed in 1995, it was simply named Pitzenbach gorge bridge, but then it was dedicated to the successful alpine skier Benni Raich. With a clear span of 137,7 m and a height of 94 m, it is the highest pedestrian suspension bridge of Austria. No wonder that bungee jumpers have discovered this bridge, jumping into the depth! Due to its extraordinary form, the Benni Raich bridge is also a popular photo motif.
