Kundler Klamm 2011

Kundl gorge

Kundl in the Inntal valley boasts one of the most beautiful natural canyons of Austria.

Once upon a time the Wildschönau area used to be a lake, that was inhabited by a tremendous dragon. When a farmer succeeded in defeating this dragon, this creature bit the rock towards Kundl in its death agony, resulting in the emptying of this lake towards this direction. This is how the Wildschönau emerged and the Kundl gorge was born. This is the legend about the origins of this natural canyon, called Kundler Klamm.

A pleasant walking trail takes across the canyon, from Kundl (526 m asl) to Mühltal-Wildschönau (782 m asl), lining the waters of the Wildschönauer Ache river. The trail starts in the south of Kundl at a small footbridge, overcoming the wild waters and taking to a resting area with a little fountain containing spring water. Afterwards the well-prepared trail snakes across rock faces, which are sometimes even 200 m high. Impressive! Moreover you pass an ancient beech which is monumentally protected. Thereafter it runs past a tavern, towards a wooden bridge. In 2009 the gorge of Kundl has been reopened to the public, after an extended period of safety activities including the installation of collecting nets, anchors etc.

A visit to the gorge can be combined with a journey with the so-called Wildschönauer Bummelzug train, which takes you from Wildschönau to the entrance of the gorge, at a velocity of 10 km/h. In summer months this train runs daily. By the way: in the brook bed of the Wildschönauer Ache river, there are many different stones, which you can have cut in the only stone masonry of Tyrol, located at Kundl. A particular souvenir!
