Kaiserklamm gorge
The Kaiserklamm gorge at Brandenberg is located in one of the most beautiful canyon landscapes of Austria.
About 10 km from Brandenberg, after the component locality of Pinegg, there is the Kaiserklamm gorge, a natural phenomenon that has been named after the emperor Franz Josef I (emperor = Kaiser). Originally it served to transport wood on the Brandenberger Ache river down to the valley.
The trail to the Kaiserklamm canyon in the holiday area of Kufstein and surroundings starts at the 500-year old Kaiserhaus, which today is a tavern. The Kaiserhaus is a real attraction, as already the empress Elizabeth and her husband sojourned in this place, in order to walk the gorge and to go hunting. This room is still preserved in its original state. Across a forested road you reach the Kaiserklamm gorge which is characterized by the rushing Brandenberger Ache river in the depth. We recommend you to wear sturdy shoes, moreover you should be slip-proof and free from giddiness. Climbing harnesses for kids are available at the Kaiserhaus, paying a deposit. In about 1.5 hours you can walk the fascinating Kaiserklamm gorge, afterwards we recommend you to stop for a snack. Children can look forward to an adventure playground at the Kaiserhaus tavern.
The Kaiserklamm gorge is not only a natural phenomenon which is worth a visit. The gorge is also famous for rafting and kayaking: in spring the waters of the Brandenberger Ache river are venue for the so-called Kaiserklamm Trophy, a competition of the best kayakers of the world. In summer, however, the rushing waters of the mountain torrent provide a welcome refreshment. What do you think about trying wild water swimming or rubber riding? The canyon is open from Easter to late autumn, in summer daily (except on days with heavy rainfall, when it is closed for safety reasons).
