Galitzenklamm 2011

Galitzenklamm gorge

The Galitzenklamm gorge and its water educational trail are located in the holiday area of the Lienz Dolomites in East Tyrol.

Close to the villages of Leisach and Amlach, at about 700 m asl, you can find the entrance of the so-called Galitzenklamm gorge. This impressive canyon has already been opened up in the 19th century, when the visitors still had to admire the natural monument from little stairs and ladders. Today, however, you can comfortably glimpse into the canyon from trails stretching along the rock faces, which were established in 2001.

However, the Galitzenklamm gorge has got much more to offer, as there is also a water educational trail, a stone ball mill as well as a fixed rope route. The water educational trail, which is also interesting for kids, provides useful information on animals living in this area as well as the local vegetation. Moreover you get to know more about the century-old history of the Galitzenklamm gorge. In order to access the trail, you have to pay a little fee which, however, is used to preserve and develop the gorge. Also the stone ball mill is a real attraction, as it illustrates the elemental force of water, when rough stones are formed to round balls without any further resources. Once upon a time this technique was employed to form cannonballs. Fascinated? Of course you can also acquire these little stone balls at the cash desk!

In 2006 a fixed rope route (difficulty B/C) was established in the Galitzenklamm gorge. The so-called Nepal bridges take over the Galitzenbach river, 270 metres of steel cable and 250 anchor irons were employed for the fixed rope route. Everyone is invited to try this rope route, the holds are quite good and experienced climbers can also spare the best holds to make it more challenging. By the way: climbing harness and helmet can be rent at the entrance. The canyon is open from May to October, daily in summertime, otherwise in the weekends.
