Name-giving for this mountain range is the village of Waidring in the Pillersee Valley, a charming holiday destination in North Tyrol
The Waidring Alps comprise several single limestone massifs in Tyrol and in Salzburg, and stretch to the holiday area of Kitzbühel and surroundings. The mountain group includes, among others, Mt. Steinplatte, a popular hiking and skiing area in the Pillersee Valley, the Buchensteinwand, the Leogang and Lofer Mountains, which are described in their own articles, and Mt. Unterberghorn, which is often considered to be part of the Kaiser Mountains, but belongs to the Waidring Alps.
Theme paths and family parks such as the Triassic Parc Steinplatte are located in the Waidring Alps. The latter provides information on the Tethys Sea, including a miniature primordial ocean of 200 sqm. Nearby there is one of the largest viewing platforms of Austria. It boasts the form of a fan coral with transparent floor parts, making you look down into the depth of 70 metres.
Peaks: The highest elevations in the single limestone alpenstocks are Mt. Birnhorn (2,634 m a.s.l.) in the Leogang Mountains, Mt. Grosses Ochsenhorn (2,511 m a.s.l.) in the Lofer Mountains, Mt. Steinplatte (1,869 m a.s.l.) and the Buchsteinwand, a 1,462 m high panoramic mountain.
Trails: Mt. Steinplatte and Mt. Buchensteinwand with its walkable summit cross are popular climbing and skiing areas, which can easily be reached from the Pillersee Valley and the holiday area of Kitzbühel. The Leogang and Lofer Mountains are less known among hikers and climbers.
