Loferer Steinberge mountain chain
The Loferer Steinberge mountains are located in Austria, strictly speaking in North Tyrol and Salzburg.
The Loferer Steinberge mountains are a mountain chain in the Northern Limestone Alps and are closely connected with the Leoganger Steinberge mountains: both mountain chains border on each other and are sometimes also defined as subgroup. The two mountain chains, called “Steinberge”, are divided by the 1,202 m high Römersattel pass. The Loferer Steinberge mountains are a karst mountain chain and offer a wide cave system. The most famous is the Prax ice cave in Salzburg.
The Loferer Steinberge mountains are delimited by the Chiemgau Alps in the north, the Berchtesgaden Alps in the east and the Leonganger Steinberge mountains in the south east, while in the south west there are the Kitzbühel Alps, and in the west the Kaiser mountain chain stretches. In Tyrol, there are holidays destinations such as Waidring and Hochfilzen in the Pillersee valley. Also the Loferer Alm, a famous skiing area, is located in Tyrolean territory, which, however, belongs to the Steinplatte mountain and not to the Loferer Steinberge mountains.
Peaks: the highest mountain of the Loferer Steinberge mountain chain is the Grosses Ochsenhorn with 2,511 m asl. Further important peaks are the Grosses Reifehorn (2,480 m), the Breithorn (2,413 m), the Rothörnl (2,394 m) and the Seehorn (2,155 m).
Trails: in the Loferer Steinberge mountains, there are two fixed rope routes as well as the Schmidt-Zabierow mountain hut, which is the only mountain hut of the local Alpinists’ association AVS in this mountain chain. Otherwise the mountains of this range are not really famous, as there are not opened up by lift facilities. The ascend to the peak of the Loferer Skihörndl (2,286 m), however, is a popular ski tour.
