Zillergründl basin

At 1,850 m asl, there is one of the five artificial lakes of the Zillertal valley, called Zillergründl basin.

From 1980 to 1987, in the rear Zillertal valley, an artificial lake called Zillergründl was established, whose water masses today flow to the plant of Häusling and, after electricity being produced, farther on to the basin of Stillup. Zillergrund is also a side valley of the Zillertal valley, a charming valley of pastures, via which the lake can be reached.

From Mayrhofen, an 18 km long toll road takes you to the artificial lake. On this road there is less traffic than on the famous panoramic road to the Schlegeis basin. Every day, only a limited number of cars is admitted. The road for public transport ends at the so-called Bärenbad at 1,450 m asl. Moreover you can approach the Zillergründl basin by bus starting from Mayrhofen. The 4 km that are left to the lake can be overcome on foot, by the Bärenbad-Zillergründl bus service or by bike. For cyclists the barrier was opened several years ago and the longest tunnel on this road was illuminated.

From the Zillergründl basin, a beautiful trail takes you to the Plauener mountain hut at 2,364 m asl, along the lake. Enjoy the fabulous view on the surrounding Zillertal Alps. Another tour that is highly recommendable, but reserved for experienced alpinists, takes hikers on the 2,690 m high Rambachköpfl mountain. Also a German TV series called “Medicopter 117″ was shot in part at the Zillergründl basin.
