The 28 m high Stillup Dam dams up the melt-water, which flows from the mighty glaciers in the surroundings into the lake
Lake Stillup, or Speicher Stillup in German, one of the five artificial lakes in the Zillertal valley, is located in the idyllic Zillertal Alps Nature Park. From 1965 to 1977, with a break, the Stillup Basin, belonging to the Mayrhofen Power Plant, was established. It is fed by the Stillup River, originating in the Zillertal Alps, and by the water of four mighty glaciers in the surroundings.
The Stillup Basin is accessible via the Stillup Valley, the shortest of the four side valleys, stretching fan-shaped in the surroundings of Mayrhofen. An 8 km long toll road starts behind the Ahorn Cable Car in Mayrhofen and takes you to the Wasserfall (Waterfall) tavern along several hairpin bends. Also the public bus runs between Mayrhofen and the lake, a hike takes you further on to the Grüne Wand Mountain Hut at the valley head.
The wild romantic Stillup Valley in the Zillertal Alps Nature Park is a well-frequented destination in summer months, and a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers. Also a waterfall is located here at 1,130 m a.s.l. It is the largest waterfall of the valley, also known as "Krönung" (Coronation). Here live chamois, marmots and 500 butterfly species, an example for the biodiversity of this place.
