Lake Tassenbach

The artificial lake is one of the main resting points for migrating birds in this area and is also habitat for about 150 bird species

The artificial lake Tassenbach offers a nature educational trail and is located in the Hochpustertal valley. Already several centuries ago, in Strassen there was supposed to be an artificial lake. Back then, the brash and defrost water of the nearby Messensee buried the Roman settlement of Messa, which resulted in a lake that was established towards the hamlet of Tassenbach. Written documents regarding fishing in this lake date by the way back to the 14th century.

In the centuries to follow, the lake started drying up. In the place where this lake was originally situated, today there is the little Tassenbach Reservoir, which is part of the Amlach Power Plant and serves as intermediate storage site for the water of the Drau river. When it was planned, the focus was set on preserving the local ecologic circumstances. The reservoir in East Tyrol - called Stausee Tassenbach in German - was established like a little lake with bankside and reed belt, which resulted in a further living environment for animals and plants.

Plants that used to grow here before were removed and replanted round the lake. Also the rare creeping willow and bay willow grow in this place. You can experience this unique natural landscape along the Tassenbach Nature Educational Trail. This path of 2 km takes round the biotope and provides varied information on interesting information panels.
