Lake Brennersee
Lake Brennersee is located only a stone’s throw from the Passo del Brennero and is a popular destination for fishermen.
Lake Brennersee is located only one km in the north of the Passo del Brennero, the border between North Tyrol (Austria) and South Tyrol (Italy). The affluent and run-off of the lake is the Sill river, the waters of the lake boast the quality category I to II. Lake Brennersee belongs to the municipality Gries am Brenner and is located in the component locality Brennersee, a little hamlet comprising a few buildings.
Even if the lake is handled as lake for bathing, it is located in a rather shady position. For this reason, and also due to its high location at 1,300 m asl, not even in summer the water temperature exceeds 12 degrees C. However, due to its remote location and the surrounding mountains, it is nevertheless a popular destination for hikers. The greyish colour of the lake is by the way referable to an algae on its ground. Its location in the heart of nature and its fish stock make the lake a popular meeting point for fishermen.
Also in winter, this area is terrain for those who love sports under the open sky. The snow-shoeing tour to the Padauner Kogel mountain (2,068 m asl) in the pre-Alps of Tux takes you for instance past the lake. Moreover, above the lake, there are two impressive waterfalls, one of which is used for ice climbing. As it is of medium to high difficulty, it is reserved to experienced athletes. Finally a curiosity: there is even a song on this lake, called “Brennersee Walzer” by the Fidelen Inntaler.
