Kaunertaler Gletscher 2011

Kaunertal Glacier

The Kaunertal Glacier and the skiing area Fendels are accessible via one skipass only.

The high alpine paradise of the Kaunertal Glacier is accessible since 1980 by the Kaunertal Glacier Road. The Glacier Road reveals a year-round mountain world to the visitor, from the valley up to an elevation of 2,750 m above sea level, directly on the edge of the glacial wall of the Weisseeferner. In the course of its 26 km it features a total of 29 bends and an altitude difference of ca. 1,500 m.

No matter if summer or winter, the constantly snow and ice-covered glacier, which is kind of symbol of the Kaunertal valley, shows up from afar and forms the southern tail of the valley. The Kaunertal Glacier is snow-sure from October to June, whereas you can enjoy also skiing in the skiing area Fendels from December to April. Both skiing areas are accessible via one skipass only. Moreover the day pass becomes cheaper from hour to hour.

54 km of ski slopes and 17 lift facilities are waiting to be explored in the Kaunertal valley - the glacial plateau only features nine lift facilities and 36 km of slopes. Isn’t that a great offer? However, directly at the glacier restaurant, there will soon be the largest igloo village with ice church, information igloo, arts igloo and much more. A little secret: also numerous national ski teams come onto the Kaunertal Glacier for practising.

Part of the Glacier Park is also the Kaunergrat Nature Park including an area of 58,920 hectares. In 2003 it has been officially recognized, the idea, however, has already been brought into being in 1998. The landscape of the nature park, which is located in the heart of the Oetztal Alps, has been formed in the Ice Age and includes all altitudinal belts as well as a great number of natural monuments of incredible beauty.

Peculiarities: Kaunertal glacier road (high alpine road to 2,750 m asl), the youngest glacier of Tyrol
