Axamer Lizum skiing area - Innsbruck

This skiing area is located 19 km from Innsbruck and used to be venue for the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976.

The Axamer Lizum, the largest skiing area of the surroundings of Innsbruck is a rather famous one, as the Olympic Winter Games of 1964 and 1976 were staged on its slopes. On the occasion of the Winter Games of 1964, a funicular was constructed, the so-called Olympiabahn, taking sports enthusiasts on the Hoadl mountain (2,340 m asl). And why is the skiing area called like this? Axams is a village that is only 8 km away, and “Lizum” stands for an Alpine pasture located at the head of the valley. In fact, the Axamer Lizum is an extensive hiking region in summer.

From the Axamer Lizum skiing area, you can reach the villages of Axams, Götzens and Mutters. Moreover there is an illuminated toboggan run from the valley station to Axams. The valley runs to Götzens and Mutters, however, are particularly snow-sure, as there is also the skiing area Muttereralm, providing artificial snow-making. The skiing area Axamer Lizum is internationally famous with snowboarders, as there is a a 300 hectares large freeride area with jumps and rails, a snow park and fun way, a race course, a permanent exercising course and a timing course. Do you need a break? The Panorama Restaurant Hoadl Haus (2,340 m asl) offers the largest covered terrace of the Alps!

If you spend longer holidays, we recommend you the discount card, a card that makes you get reduced day and half day tickets in this skiing area. It is available at the ticket offices. The Axamer Lizum belongs also to the ski carousel Olympia SkiWorld Innsbruck, that comprises a total of nine skiing areas. By the way, in 2013 the Axamer Lizum was given the “Top of the Mountains” award as best skiing area.
