The Roman settlement Aguntum is located about 5 km from Lienz and provides an insight into the former Roman city, which belonged to the province of Noricum and flourished in the 1st and 2nd century. The Roman town was destroyed in 450 BC. Several years ago several elements were laid open and were examined from an archaeological point of view. In the course of time the area of the former Roman settlement has become an open air museum.
One of the elements that can be visited today is the atrium building - never has there been layed open a building of its kind in the alpine area! The thermal bath of Aguntum indicates that the population must have been quite wealthy. What you can also see if you visit the Roman settlement is the impressive city wall and numerous city gates. Moreover the handicraft centre has been layed open.
However, on the viewing tower you can enjoy a fabulous view on Aguntum, and there is also a museum that is dedicated to the Roman city. It provides an insight into everyday life in the city. Clothes, ceramics, reliefs and coins are exhibited.
