St. Anton am Arlberg is considered to be the “cradle of alpine skiing”. Also the famous ski pioneer Hannes Schneider and the skier Karl Schranz come from this place. Thus it is standing to reason that in this place a ski museum is established, which should illustrate the development of alpine skiing from its beginnings.
In 1912 Bernhard Trier of Germany had an idyllic building constructed on a ground above the Galzigbahn funicular, that is to say the “Arlberg-Kandahar” building. In the course of time the small house repeatedly changed hands and was on sale in the 1970s. The tourist authority took advantage of the situation and created the local museum and ski museum St. Anton am Arlberg in the stylish “Arlberg-Kandahar” building.
This museum today is located on the 1st floor of the building and does not only illustrate the development of alpine skiing, but also the development of St. Anton am Arlberg and its road to a skiing destination. Attention is also directed to local and cultural history as well as to the railway and tunnel construction. The “Arlberg-Kandahar” building offers also a restaurant, which provides culinary delights in the haunting stube, the library, the smokers’ room or the music room.
