Haus der Völker
This museum in Schwaz represents a meeting place and provides an insight into the diversity of cultures.
The “Haus der Völker”, which literally means “House of People”, has been founded in 1995 by Gert Chesi, Tyrolean citizen and Africa enthusiast, and is directed by a culture association. This art and ethnography museum is the unique ethnographic museum of western Austria and contains nowadays some 1,000 exhibits, which have been collected in the course of 30 years. The collection is completed by a range of exhibits on loan.
The “House of People” is above all dedicated to the culture of rituals in Africa and Asia. Moreover numerous special exhibitions are organised and there are rooms on special topics, for example vodoo temples, Asia or Africa. The museum presents different cultures in a comparative way and puts the information across in an a clear way. What is particularly interesting is that the museum is also editor of the magazine “A4 - Das Magazin für Aussereuropäische Kunst und Kultur” (Magazine for non-European arts and culture), to which you can by the way subscribe.
Moreover the building offers a café and an ethno-shop, which is a real treasure chest for ethnographic objects. This is where you can acquire cult objects and artistic works of Africa and Asia as well as Buddhist arts and jewels and textiles of Africa. A paradise for those who love travelling and to make a side-trip to a different world!
