Alpinarium Galtür 2011

Alpinarium Galtür

The Alpinarium consists of an exhibition, a café, an indoor climbing wall, an internet lounge as well as seminar rooms.

The Alpinarium Galtür was conceived as a response to an avalanche tragedy in 1999, which destroyed part of the village of Galtür. One element of the afterwards newly built 345 m long and 19 m high avalanche safety wall, consisting of 700,000 kg of steel, is the so-called Alpinarium. Exactly this combination of show room and barrier wall make this building unique. In other words, it combines safety measures with functional content.

The exhibition in the Alpinarium guides visitors across the world of mountains and provides information about the formation of the Alps, climate, erosion, precipitations, avalanches as well as their impact on humans. In addition the information are presented in a demonstrative way. The indoor climbing wall in the Alpinarium is a challenge for adults and children, and the panoramic platform offers a 360° view on the fantastic mountains of North Tyrol, including the Gorfenspitze and Ballunspitze mountains. An unforgettable experience!

In the Alpinarium, there is also a room dedicated to the commemoration of the victims of the tragedy of February 23, 1999. By the way: the Alpinarium Galtür was nominated for the European Museum Prize in 2007 and awarded with the Austrian quality seal for museums in 2008.
