Landeck Castle
The emblem of the city of Landeck is located on a steep rock spur in the Oberinntal valley.
In the south of the city of Landeck in the Oberinntal valley, there is the Landeck Castle. The castle has been built in 1290 AD by the Counts of Tyrol and until 1797 it has been site of the court and administration. Afterwards is was hospital, casern and accomodation for workers. However, nowadays the castle has got different roles to play. In Landeck Castle there is a local museum, illustrating the history of the region. Part of the museum is dedicated to the so-called “Yeniche”.
The “Yeniche” were under way with their barrows in order to supply the population with goods and services such as broom-making and pan repairing. Another part of the museum is dedicated to the “Swabian children” (Schwabenkinder): in the 19th century children from poor families were brought to the child markets in Germany, mainly in upper Swabia. There they could be purchased by farmers for the season.
The castle gallery exhibits above all contemporary arts, especially of local artists. In the course of the year a series of exhibitions focusing on this topic are organised. In the “Galerie im Turm” (gallery in the tower), however, the main issue is the social and cultural identity in our lives. However, Landeck Castle is also a research centre and venue for seminars and tastings. Those who love music can look forward to the concerts staged in the Gothic castle hall, as well as events such as “Advent in the castle”, transforming it into a fairytale place to stay at.
