Bruck Castle
Since 1943 Bruck Castle is the museum of the city of Lienz.
Bruck Castle is located in a mixed forest on a hill close to the Hochstein mountain, the local mountain of Lienz. The name “Bruck” (bridge) derives from the bridge at its foot.
From the donjon you can look at the entire basin of Lienz. A great view on the surroundings has been crucial for the defensiveness and representation. Additionally the access to the castle was protected by a machicoulis. In the course of time Bruck Castle has often changed hands and also had different roles to play, as for example weapons stockpile, military hospital, residence castle of the Counts of Görz as well as brewery. Nowadays Bruck Castle is the museum of the city of Lienz, and the inner courtyard is often venue for concerts and theatre performances.
The collection includes an art collection with paintings and graphic as well as plastic pieces of art, an archeological section that is dedicated to the Roman settlement Aguntum, objects from Tyrolean folklore and rare minerals. On a regular basis there are special exhibitions. Moreover the exhibition includes some of the masterpieces of the East Tyrolean painter Albin Egger-Lienz (1868 - 1926), exhibited on the third floor. These paintings illustrate artists between the poles of modernism, abstraction and regional art. By the way: there are museum pedagogic programmes for school classes!
