Ambras Castle is located in the south east of Innsbruck, close to the locality of Amras, and is a branch of the Vienna Art Museum. It is one of the major sights of the city of Innsbruck and closely linked to the personality of Archduke Ferdinand II. (1529 - 1595), who founded the Ambras collection and had a modern museum facility built.
The collection of Archduke Ferdinand II. on Ambras Castle has been reconstructed: the Saloon of Miracle, the armory and the Antiquarium (Hall of Antiquities). Originally also the saliera has been exhibited in this place. Moreover there is a portrait gallery of the House of Habsburg which is distributed on three floors. The exhibition includes some 200 portraits of famous artists like Lukas Cranach, van Dyck, Tizian or Velásquez. A real highlight!
What is also worth to be visited is the Spanish Saloon, which is venue for a range of summer concerts. The wonderful park of Ambras Castle has been layed out in English style.
