Günther Mader

Today the former Austrian skier is racing chef of Salomon Austria.

Günther Mader was born on June 24, 1964 in Matrei at Passo del Brennero in Tyrol and debuted in the ski world cup in 1982. Right up to his retirement Günther Mader won 14 world cup races. Moreover he is one of the only three skiers who suceeded in winning at least one world cup race in every alpine discipline. Twice he was second in the overall world cup ranking between 1989 and 1996 and six times he was best Austrian skier.

In 1998 he retired from active racing and only two weeks after he suffered a stroke, paralysing almost 85% of his vocabulary. Fortunately Günther Mader largely succeeded in recovering from the stroke. Recently Mader has composed a book entitled “ÜberLeben” on his life as professional athlete and the period of time after his stroke. This book is much more than only a spimple biography and it reports on living with and surviving in the ski racing circus.

Today Mader is racing chief of Salomon Austria and lives, together with his family, in Mieders (Innsbruck). Moreover he was awarded with the golden badge of honour of the Republic of Austria.
